The Supreme Court’s recent encounter with AI-generated, non-existent case law is a reminder of why this issue matters. The debate is not over whether courts should use AI, but how they can use it responsibly, ethically and in ways that do not undermine citizens’ rights or access to justice.

As AI becomes an increasingly important part of the justice system, responsible adoption cannot be an afterthought. Governance has to be built into the process from the start.
